Part 1: Gentle Stretching

Tension Release For Back Pain Relief  – 20 Minutes

This routine works in two ways:
1) Stretch the hip and back muscles connected to your spine and release tension caused by muscle tightness.
2) Put your body in safe, easy positions that counter sitting and inactivity.

Part 2: Gentle Strengthening

Strength and Mobility for Hips, Core, & Spine

Address the root causes of back pain to get rid of discomfort and prevent it from happening in the future. This section has two workouts, in order to help you safely build strength and mobility – without pain.

Choose from:

Option A – Extension-Based Strengthening – Pain while rounding your back? Use extension-based exercises and yoga postures to help strengthen your body without rounding your spine.

Option B – Flexion-Based Strengthening – Pain while arching your back? Use flexion-based exercises and yoga postures to help strengthen your body without arching your spine.

For your first 1-2 weeks, use Part 1. When you’re feeling stronger, add Part 2 into your routine. Use Part 2 as your main workout, but use Part 1 as often as needed for pain relief. When choosing which workout from Part 2 is appropriate for you, make sure you’re doing whichever workout causes you the least pain. If neither causes you pain, you can use both. If both cause you pain, go back to using Part 1 exclusively. With time, you’ll be able to do both workouts in Part 2.

    This teacher explains how NOT to overstretch or pull anything. He’s all about getting you properly stretched slowly and in control so you DON’T hurt yourself, and actually get stronger and more limber and able to enjoy all of life much more. I haven’t felt this good since I went to a physical therapist. I feel loosened up, have less pain, and I’ve only done it a few times! Even my husband, who said he could never do yoga, can do this, and he feels better, too. Now my husband and I have another time together that is and enjoyable. Thank you, Dean!

    I had a spinal fusion L5/S1 1.5 years ago, primarily due to pain associated with a spondylolisthesis diagnosis. I was continuing to have pain in my back and I found this program (along with his Yoga Strong program). This has been excellent for relieving pain and building strength, I think way better than all that physical therapy I did! Only wish I found it sooner.

    I have a number of Dean’s workouts and he just keeps getting better with each release! Even though I have a large yoga collection (from multiple instructors) I’m not always consistent so not always ready to jump back in with “power” yoga practices. Dean is a wonderful and caring instructor who takes ego out of the equation to offer an accessible program for everyone. The stretching and strengthening practices are slow and restorative (while using props) with detailed instruction. You will love and use this PROGRAM often to feel better and improve your total body, not just your back! I’m planning on purchasing more of these beginner PROGRAMs to give as gifts, as this is the kind of workout that will improve anyone’s quality of life!

    I am so very very VERY happy I found this. I’ve wanted a simple but effective yoga for my back. I have mild scoliosis and also a desk job which I do 9 1/2 hour shifts 4 days a week. After each shift my back and neck kill me. Not only has this helped me not feel like death is around the corner but I am sleeping better too. I am truly grateful for this program. He is wonderful and how he explains is simple to understand.

    I’m 52 years old and have had chronic back problems for about 20 years in the form of inoperable Tarlov Cysts up and down my spine and some areas of stenosis. If I maximize the space in my vertebrae and maintain good posture, no nerves will be pinched or compressed and I can be asymptomatic. I’ve been using Dean’s Yoga Fix for a while now Monday through Friday. This new video, Better Back Yoga is the perfect supplement for the weekend when I need some extra routines, weekdays when I want a little more, or just when I need some immediate pain relief. Like all of Dean’s videos, it is non-intimidating for guys, easy to follow, and adaptable whether you are just starting and don’t have much flexibility or can handle a little more. Like all of his videos, he delivers what he promises.

    The instruction is clear and allows for modifications, as some of us don’t have the flexibility that some who practice yoga might. Instead of simply following poses, he explains what you should be trying to accomplish with each movement. The workouts are generally twenty minutes in length making it easy to fit in workouts. Also, buying the program gives you the opportunity to stream the workout, so if you have a smartphone or mobile device with video capability you can stream wherever you are.
    No mystique, just effective exercise.

    After a year of having several back strains I decided I better focus on strengthening my back before things got much worse. I was already familiar with Dean Pohlman’s work on his site, so I knew I would get a high quality product here – I was NOT disappointed! In the first few days of the gentle stretching routine I got a quick lesson in where all I had tension in my back, hips, hamstrings and more. You think you know your body until you do yoga and learn a lot of lessons! I look forward to doing the routines now because I know they get results. If you are new to yoga, don’t fret about understanding things, Dean does a great job explaining proper form and what you should and shouldn’t feel. Highly recommended.

    I have been following Dean for some time now. His programs are always very easy to follow and as he explains the movements he gives you various options to each pose so it helps if you are not as limber as he is. I have used several of his programs and they are always up-to-date and complete as far as what I feel I need to know. If you are having issues with your back from time to time, I feel this program is a great program to add to your inventory. I always feel he works with you at your level and doesn’t expect too much! Keep up the good work, Dean!

    I started this year with the instructor’s online yoga programs including “bulletproof your back” and have found them to be immensely helpful. Dean’s programs are the only ones I have been able to stick to for the past year because they are so effective and feel great. I got this version to work with my wife since she has been suffering back issues of late and going through physical therapy. As always, the instructor explains in detail what you should feel and how to engage yourself to ensure you don’t hurt yourself. I like that there is both preventative measures and immediate routines to do if you are experiencing issues right now.

    Yes, using this video has helped relieve by back pain, and most other reviews talk about that. What I liked most about this particular video is how Dean explains in pretty good detail HOW to do each pose and how to work up to doing it awesomely. For example, I have watched dozens of yoga videos that have you do tree pose. I have never been able to do that. Dean showed me how to start easy with my one foot at my ankle and then over time raise it until I had the full tree pose. He does the same with all the other exercises – showing how to work up to the full pose if you don’t know how to do it My back is better, my yoga poses are way better! Thanks Dean.

    This is an excellent approach to relieving back pain both short and long term. I didn’t have a lot of previous experience with yoga and was not the most flexible. Dean does an outstanding job leading you through and explains everything clearly every step of the way. Previous yoga experience, or flexibility, is not required. Each pose has options for beginners. I felt a difference after the first session and really like the approach to first help alleviate pain and soreness and then strengthen the back and associated muscles over time.

    I purchased this video a couple of weeks ago, right after back spasms caused me to miss several days of work. I followed the three-workout protocol, starting with the gentle stretches, graduated to doing the extension workout on several occasions, which definitely increased my back strength (love the full locust), and then today did the flexion workout without any pain. I also recommend the gentle stretches in the evening as a way to decompress from the work day and put the mind in relaxation mode. The three main workout are right around 20 minutes and thus are easy to fit in even if one is busier than one would like to be.

    I have purchased other programs by Dean, and one common thread they share is quality instruction that comes from a place of true concern for my well-being. I am by no means in optimum shape, but I have been able to benefit from this program and see results almost right away.     I have used this program tonight for the first time since buying it when it first came out. Came across some back pain so did my exercises in part 1 and felt better. It has to be an ongoing process to better your back as much as possible without hurting yourself. I really like Dean’s variety of exercises and levels of stretches in explaining if you can’t reach that point, start slow and work your way up (my viewpoint). If you are looking in helping your back, this is it!

    Dean Pohlman is awesome! This program is great. I belong to his program and it’s amazing was the 20 min stretch on this video does for your back. I can up with pain in my lower back.     Dean’s non sprititual no nonsense approach to yoga is what drew me to his programs in the first place and the Better Back routines don’t disappoint! Clear, concise instruction for all levels of yoga practioners coupled with targeted muscle activation all in a neatly bundled less than 30 minute workout! If you have any kind of back pain this is a must!!! Highly recommend all of Dean’s workouts but the 10 minute bonus is great for the middle of the work day especially if you sit at a desk all day. Keep up the great work Dean!

    I’ve been doing yoga with Dean since July. I absolutely love it. I have an old lumbar disc herniation that gives me trouble every now and again and this program really helps improve my flexibility, strength, and reduces stiffness.

    Definitely worth a try for any yoga newbies (or old pros!)

    I’ve been doing some of the programs from Dean for a while now but I concentrated on the back program the last few weeks and it has been amazing. I have chronic back issues from past injuries and osteopenia but these stretches and the exercises to strengthen your back and the muscles that support it have been invaluable in relieving pain and tension in my upper and lower back. I learned some of what is needed in physical therapy but these stretches and exercises take it to a whole other level for me and make me feel so much better. It makes doing the other yoga exercises easier and more comfortable as the support for my back is improving.

    I suffer from very bad back pain and have a disc bulge in my L4/L5. I love Dean’s program and I’m so excited he came out with this program. I woke up with terrible pain and stiffness in my back and forced myself to do Phase 1. Immediately after I felt a night and day difference in pain and my back felt so much more relaxed. His yoga programs are the best out there and he’s extremely knowledgeable. I love that it’s fitness based and not spiritual at all. Highly recommend!
